Wealth

There is no wealth but life. Life, including all its powers of love, of joy, and of admiration. That country is the richest which nourishes the greatest numbers of noble and happy human beings; that man is richest, who, having perfected the functions of his own life to the utmost, has also the widest helpful influence, both personal, and by means of his possessions, over the lives of others.

-John Ruskin

  1. Starting with one person at a time – at home – at work – with family and friends. We can’t have a vision of wealth for humanity without nourishing and accepting the least of these in our own center of influence.

    • AMEN!! I just had a conversation with a friend today about what it means to help the least of these, as Jesus called us to do. It’s only truly help if it serves in the way the receiver NEEDS it, not when it’s self-serving the giver … that is perpetuating oppression.

      • In fact, that’s what Ruskin says, “that man is richest, who, having perfected the functions of his own life to the utmost, then has the widest helpful influence on behalf of others …” How can we authentically love and serve others unless we commit to, at least, trying to love those closest to us, hone your skills for compassion and love with them, then go and serve others with a pure heart. That is how we serve … through our heart offering dignity by lifting others up.

  2. Selfless and unconditional love!! The highest calling and most challenging because at times the ones that need it the most seem to be the most difficult to love – the work is ours to do with perseverance and without judgment or expectations.
